Default Character Build Question

Greetigns and Blessings

I have been working an insane amount of time now so I could have a puter to play this. And last night I bought it. (yay Team GothKatt) Next week I am doing the pre-Order so I can get into the Game. And I ahve been reading a veriety of diffrent things, and I had some questions and was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

A friend and I will be teaming up for game play, guild status currently unkown. He's played in one beta so far, and has decided to play a Warrior-necro Mix. So I have a bit of knowledge on what he's doing. Myself however, I am at a bit of a loss and was wondering if anyone could elp out here.

i'm the kinda of player you'll all hate. I like creating that annoying character that loves to screw around with other. And if it benefits the team, even better. So I know I want to have mesmer in there. I guess my question is, where do I go after that? I know that I could reallly go in any direction, but I have to admit I'm not sure which way to go as I haven't had any time to play yet, and I might not make the Game play until april (might be working through the March beta )

So with the thought of a Character that is Capable of annoyance and still hold it's own a in a team fight, and have something to viably offer.

personally I love to play a ran/nec and he does much of what you're referring to.

I user pin down on warriors especially to slow their rate of movement
concussion shot to silence casters
rend enchantments to remove beneficial spells from opposing players
there's also spells to weaken armor and slow attack speed of characters.

That also leaves you with plenty of skill slots to be able to put out some decent damage as well.

Mesmer also has some nice skills for messing with people as you put it.

Personally if it were me, I'd tie it with a ranger as well, but that's because I love the rangers. Play around and find what you enjoy playing. Read the profession descriptions on this site and decide what would be fun for you.

If you want to mess up other players, you're definitely looking at taking either Necromancer or Mesmer. Both those classes are specialists at counter-moves and there's no better way to trip someone up that to counter their moves. Mesmers tend to work better against casters or against energy - preventing things before they happen - while Necros are best against fighters or against enchantments - preventing things after they happen - although each can handle the other in a pinch, too.

I wouldn't, however, pair them together. They're both good at what they do but they both rather step on each toes a bit much for my tastes. Since you're looking to survive, I'd take up the Ranger profession as your primary. It's a ranged damage profession that offers increased protection which will work well with what you're aiming for. You can make a Ran/Nec or Ran/Mes that's going to be a hardened target and also out to spoil another player's day fairly easily.

That's what I'd suggest, but don't be afraid to try out each of the profs. Spend a bit of time in Old Ascalon and try things out. You won't get the full picture of what each profession's capable of but you will get a pretty good idea. Then, just pick the one you'd like best.

Thank you everyone. I really apprichiate the help and thoughts here. Like i said, I've been a little behond in things, and this offers something to look at

I guess my next question is, how do the multi class things work?
Would it be as effective going mesmer/ranger or Necro/Ranger? instead of ranger as primary?

in this situation I'd take ranger primary. Why? Rangers are very hardy characters and are hard to take down, normally they're left for the same time as warriors which leaves you more time to wreak your havoc.

Many of the necro skills make you sacrifice your health so it's good to have the ranger health pool to pull from and also allows you to stay out of the frey while you deal your damage.

The've also got a nice little skill that lets you reclaim energy if you're using some high energy skills.

You have two professions. Your primary one. That's the Ranger/* in Ranger/Mesmer. And your secondary one. That's the */Mesmer in Ranger/Mesmer.

From you secondary you recieve access to that profession's skills - you can learn them and save them on your character and slot them in your eight skill skill bar and so on - and the attributes that affect those skills. You'll get all that from your primary as well but you'll also get a bit more. You'll get what's known as a primary attribute, which is an attribute or statistic that only primaries of that profession have, for one. And you'll also get your look. The armor you wear depends on your primary profession. You can't wear armor from your secondary profession. And armor impacts a lot of things.

What's relevant here is the fact that a Ranger has, arguably, better armor than a Mesmer or a Necromancer. Those two are casters and get caster armor. They get a bit more energy for a bit less protection. A Ranger has a bit more protection and a bit less energy. If you want ot survive, the Ranger's your better choice because playing that you'll take less damage.

As Aladdar said, check out the profession guides on the main page of this site to find out more.
